Best Simple Brownie Recipe
These brownies are a favourite in our household! They are amazingly rich and chocolatey with a divine gooey middle, and they never last long out of the oven. In fact, they are lucky to make it out the door as a wrapped gift!
There is something so nice about receiving a baked gift fresh from the kitchen. It shows that you have put time and effort into making your gift, and thought about what the recipient will enjoy. So, if you know someone who is fond of chocolate, then this simple brownie recipe is just the thing.

Decadent Chocolate Brownie Recipe
- 1 1/4 cups (300g) butter, softened at room temperature
- 2 cups (400g) brown sugar, firmly packed
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup (120g) plain flour
- 1 cup (120g) cocoa
- 1 cup (100g) chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup (approximately 60g) chocolate chips or chunks
Replace the walnuts with other nuts like almonds or pecans, or use a combination. You could also add raisins to the mix.
- Preheat oven to 320°F (160°C). Line a 7 x 11 inch (18 x 28 cm) baking tin with baking paper.
- Cream butter and sugar together with an electric beater (the butter will turn pale, and the mixture will be light and fluffy).
- Mix in the eggs, one at a time, using a low speed.
- Sift in flour and cocoa, and mix together on moderate speed. I like to gently stir in the flour/cocoa with a spoon first, which prevents a dust storm when you start mixing!
- Mix in the walnuts and chocolate chips by hand, and spread the mixture into your lined baking tin.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes. The result is a cake-like crust, and moist and gooey center!
Yield: 24 decadent chocolate brownies.
Serving your brownies...
These brownies won't last long...they are so delicious! They are wonderful served warm from the oven with cream or ice-cream and fresh strawberries, but are equally delectable served cold with a hot cup of coffee or tea.
If giving as a gift, sift over some icing sugar for a gourmet finish! Why not bake a batch and present them in a homemade gift box?
You can also make up this recipe as a brownies in a jar gift. Basically you put all the dry ingredients in a 1 quart jar, with quantities scaled down slightly so that they fit. The recipient just has to mix in some eggs and butter, pop the mix in the oven, and sit down to enjoy their fresh brownies :-)
